Why EUA Island is the best place in the world to swim with humpback whales

Tonga is one of the few places on Earth where you can legally swim with humpback whales. That alone makes it extraordinary. But Tonga has more than 170 islands, and where you choose to go will shape your entire experience. The most popular locations are busy, crowded, and competitive. EUA is none of those things. Here is why we made the move, and why we have never looked back.

Why does the location matter so much when swimming with humpback whales?

Humpback whales are wild animals. They respond to the energy around them. When there are multiple boats converging on the same whale, groups of people cycling in and out of the water, and an overall sense of rush and competition, the quality of the encounter changes. You feel it. The whales feel it. Choosing a quieter, less crowded location is not just more comfortable for you. It genuinely produces better swims, and it is the same respect-first approach we outline in our guide to the dos and don’ts of marine encounters.

What most people do not know about Tonga

Most people who book a humpback whale trip in Tonga end up in Vava’u. It is the most well-known location; it has the most accommodation options, restaurants and things to do on land, and it is well-serviced by flights. On paper, it looks like the obvious choice.

But Vava’u is also the most congested whale swim area in the country. There are many operators working out of the same waters, all searching for the same animals on the same days. When you find whales out there, you are often not the only boat that has found them.

Tongan law limits the number of swimmers to four people in the water at one time, plus a guide. That is the rule everywhere. But many operators in Vava’u run boats with eight paying guests. That means when your group finds whales, four people get in first while the other four wait on the boat. Your swim might be 10 to 15 minutes before you are back on board and the second group goes in.

When you add multiple boats around the same whale, with groups rotating in and out every 10 to 15 minutes, the experience starts to feel more like an attraction than an encounter. Some people accept that as part of the deal. We wanted something different.

Why we chose EUA

EUA is a small island located a short distance from the Tongan mainland. It is not on most people’s radar, and that is exactly the point. There are only two other operators working from EUA. The waters are quiet. The whales are undisturbed. And when you find them, they are yours.

We made a deliberate decision to base our trips here after seeing what the busier locations were becoming. We did not want to run trips where our guests were competing with five other boats for the same animal. We wanted a location where the experience could be what it is supposed to be: calm, unhurried, and completely focused on the whales.

EUA sits on the humpback highway

There is another reason EUA is special, and it is geographical. EUA sits directly on the route that humpback whales travel when they enter and leave Tongan waters. Every whale heading north to Ha’apai, Vava’u, and beyond passes right by this island. And every whale heading back south at the end of the season passes by again.

What that means in practice is that EUA is the first location in Tonga to see whales at the start of the season, and the last location to see them leave. Most guides will tell you humpback season in Tonga runs from July to October. Our experience tells a different story. We start sighting whales in early July and still have mothers and calves in our waters in early December. That is a longer, richer season than anything you will find in Vava’u. For a closer look at how the season unfolds, read our guide to freediving with humpback whales in Tonga.

How our group sizes work

We run five paying guests per trip, plus Dan in the water with you as your guide and safety diver. That is six people on the boat in total, before the Tongan whale guide joins us on the water.

Because the law allows four swimmers in the water at one time, the way that rotation works matters enormously. With a group of five guests and Dan, we keep rotations small and time in the water long. Nobody is sitting on the boat watching while others swim for 40 minutes.

Compare that to an operator running eight paying guests. Four people go in while four wait. By the time the second group gets their turn, the first encounter may already be winding down. You are getting a fraction of the experience and spending a large portion of your day on the boat.

That gap in experience is the difference between leaving Tonga feeling like you truly connected with these animals, and leaving wishing you had more time.

What our guests say

Earlier this season we had Jochen and Andrea join us, a couple from Germany who have swum with humpback whales in multiple locations around the world, including French Polynesia, Mo’orea, and Vava’u. They had done this before. They knew what they were looking for.

They told us that in those other locations, they found themselves competing in the water. Multiple boats, too many people, too much pressure. It created an anxious, unsettled feeling that took away from the experience no matter how good the individual encounters were.

Here on EUA they said it was completely different. No other boats. No pressure. No sense of rush. Just quiet water and whales that had no reason to be disturbed.

They also noticed the whale behaviour itself was different. More active. More curious. Breaching, tail slapping, fin slapping. Mother and calf interactions that were completely natural and unhurried. They described it as the most beautiful wildlife encounter they had ever had, anywhere in the world. They said they would not go back to French Polynesia or Vava’u. EUA was where they would return.

That kind of feedback is exactly why we made the move to this island, and exactly what we want every guest to experience.

What the swims actually look like

We offer four dedicated in-water days across our 6-day itinerary. With group sizes this small and in-water access this generous, four days is genuinely all you need. Every day on the water is purposeful.

The encounters cover the full range of what humpback whale season in Tonga offers. Early in the season you have the heat runs: multiple males competing aggressively to court a single female, moving at speeds that are genuinely shocking for animals of their size. Later in the season the mothers arrive with their calves, and those interactions are something else entirely. Quiet, tender, extraordinary. If the heat runs do not take your breath away, the mothers and calves will. We break down each of these encounters in more detail in swimming with humpback whales in Tonga.

Who leads the swims

Dan Parsons leads every trip personally. With over 12 years of professional experience in the water, Dan is one of Australia’s most experienced scientific diving consultants. He has worked with some of the world’s leading whale scientists and served as Head Safety Diving Consultant on multiple projects for National Geographic, including the 2021 Disney+ documentary series Secrets of the Whales, produced alongside ocean photographer and filmmaker Brian Skerry.

Understanding animal behaviour in the water is not something you learn on a weekend course. It comes from years of experience working alongside scientists, researchers, and some of the finest wildlife filmmakers on the planet. That knowledge shapes every decision we make on the water, from how we approach the animals to how long we stay and when we pull back.

Off the water

When you are not swimming, you will be staying in a Tongan cottage with a private chef preparing your meals throughout the trip. We have a car available for the group to explore the island. EUA is a genuinely beautiful place, with clifftop walks, quiet beaches, and a pace of life that is a world away from the tourist infrastructure of Vava’u. It feels like Tonga the way Tonga used to feel.

If you are weighing up your options

There are good operators running humpback whale trips out of Tonga. But if you are trying to decide where to go and who to go with, here is what we would ask you to consider.

How many guests will be on your boat? How long will you actually spend in the water when you find whales? How many other operators will be working the same stretch of ocean on the same day? And how much of the season will you actually be able to access?

Those questions will tell you a lot about what your experience is going to feel like before you even set foot on a plane.

We run five guests plus Dan, small rotations, a season that runs from early July to early December, and waters shared with only two other operators. If that sounds like what you are looking for, we would love to hear from you.
