Bali Freediving Trip only $1000 (Normally $1,200) Limited time only!
Imagine descending beneath a frozen field of drift ice, the silence of the ocean surrounding you as you glide through crystal-clear water. Looking up, shards of light pierce through the ice above — a ceiling unlike anything you’ve seen underwater. This is not just about depth; it’s about exploration and embracing the elements in a way few ever will.
Shiretoko, on Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido, sits in the southernmost seasonal pack ice zone in the world. Each February, drift ice arrives from the Amur River in Russia, transforming the Sea of Okhotsk into one of the most extraordinary dive environments on the planet. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and for a few short weeks each year, it becomes our dive site.
Two holes are drilled through the drift ice, giving you the ability to dive constant weight to around 13 metres or swim dynamic between holes 20 metres apart. Scuba safety divers are in the water with you throughout. Above the surface, Steller’s sea eagles and white-tailed eagles — nearly 700 of them — circle the ice fields. Red foxes wander the floes. After each session, you’ll warm up in a traditional Japanese onsen guesthouse, soaking in natural hot springs a short walk from the water’s edge.
There is nowhere else in the world where this particular experience exists.
For this trip we recommend: A good quality 5mm open cell suit or thicker, gloves, and socks. Get in contact if you would like guidance on the correct equipment for this trip.
After the ice diving wraps up, a few of us will be continuing on through Japan. Whether you want to ski world-class powder in Niseko, explore Sapporo’s food scene, visit the famous snow monkeys, or spend a few days in Tokyo before flying home — you’re welcome to join.
Itinerary suggestion:
NOTE: This isn’t a rigid itinerary — come and go as you please. This is just what Dan’s doing, and you’re welcome to join! Let us know if you’re in, and we’ll sort out group logistics.
