Bali Freediving Trip only $1000 (Normally $1,200) Limited time only!
Imagine descending beneath a frozen field of drift ice, the silence of the ocean surrounding you as you glide through crystal-clear water. Looking up, shards of light pierce through the ice above — a ceiling unlike anything you’ve seen underwater. This is not just about depth; it’s about exploration and embracing the elements in a way few ever will.
Shiretoko, on Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido, sits in the southernmost seasonal pack ice zone in the world. Each February, drift ice arrives from the Amur River in Russia, transforming the Sea of Okhotsk into one of the most extraordinary dive environments on the planet. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and for a few short weeks each year, it becomes our dive site. Unlike lake ice diving, this experience takes place in the open ocean conditions are raw, real, and entirely dependent on nature.
Two holes are drilled through the drift ice, giving you the ability to dive constant weight to around 13 metres or swim dynamic between holes 20 metres apart. Scuba safety divers are in the water with you throughout. Above the surface, Steller’s sea eagles and white-tailed eagles — nearly 700 of them — circle the ice fields. Red foxes wander the floes. After each session, you’ll warm up in a traditional Japanese onsen guesthouse, soaking in natural hot springs a short walk from the water’s edge.
There is nowhere else in the world where this particular experience exists.
Our Plan
For this trip we recommend: A good quality 5mm open cell suit or thicker, gloves, and socks. Get in contact if you would like guidance on the correct equipment for this trip.
The ice diving is done. The wetsuits are drying. And now we’ve got four days in Japan with nowhere to be.
A few of us will be continuing on after the diving, no itinerary, no agenda, just a good group of people exploring Japan together. You’re welcome to join for all of it, part of it, or none of it. No pressure either way.
Itinerary suggestion:
Here’s roughly what we’re thinking:
February 24: We’re heading out ice fishing on a frozen river in the morning — you fish it, they cook it, you eat it on the ice. In the afternoon we’re soaking in Jozankei Onsen, an outdoor hot spring in a snowy mountain valley. That evening we’ll find ourselves in Susukino — Sapporo’s biggest nightlife district — for ramen, izakayas, and whatever happens after that.
February 25: We fly down to Tokyo. Tsukiji Outer Market for breakfast — the best seafood you’ll eat in your life. TeamLab Planets in the afternoon — hard to explain, just trust us. Shinjuku for the evening.
February 26–27: Tokyo is yours. Wander, eat, sleep, explore. Fly home when you’re ready.
This part of the trip has no bookings, no group schedule, and no obligations. It’s just Dan and a bunch of people who’ve just spent a week on the ice together, seeing where Japan takes them. If that sounds like your kind of thing, let us know and we’ll loop you in.
