QUESTION

How long does the Level 1 course go for?

The Level 1 / Wave 1 freediving course runs over two days. Day one covers theory and pool training, and day two is open water diving. Both days start at 8:30 am and finish in the afternoon.

How the Two Days Run in Sydney, the Central Coast and Jervis Bay

Day one starts on land with safety, equalisation, breathing, relaxation and mindset. Then you move into the pool for dynamic apnea (swimming underwater), technique, and buddy rescue skills. In Sydney, this takes place at UNSW Aquatic Centre from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.

Day two is open water, with two sessions. You work on equalisation, free immersion (pulling yourself down the line) and depth diving (kicking down the line). In Sydney, this runs at Gordon’s Bay from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. On the Central Coast it is at Terrigal Haven, including a boat dive to the HMAS Adelaide shipwreck. In Jervis Bay, it is a boat dive.

Most students reach 10 to 20 metres by the end of the course. Progress is individual, so nobody is expected to hit a number. The focus is on good technique, relaxation and enjoying yourself.

Plan for two full days, since you will be learning or in the water for most of each one. Many dates fall on weekends, and there are some weekday options. If conditions are unsafe in the lead-up, we offer alternative dates rather than running the course in poor conditions.
