QUESTION

What if I feel nervous or uncomfortable during a freediving session overseas?

Tell your instructor straight away. Feeling nervous is common, especially on a first trip, and the team can slow things down and adjust the plan around you. Nobody is expected to push through discomfort, and every session is supervised by experienced instructors.

How Nerves Are Handled on a Freediving Trip

Plenty of guests arrive worried about holding their breath or diving in deep water. Some have told us in their reviews that they were afraid of deep water before the trip and felt at home in it by the end. Being nervous does not mean a trip is not for you.

Trips run in small groups, with coaching matched to each person’s level. That makes it easier for an instructor to notice when someone is not feeling right and to step in early. Groups usually include a mix of beginners and experienced divers, and everyone works toward their own goals.

The atmosphere is relaxed and good-humoured, but safety is taken seriously. Guests often mention how everyone jokes around until it is time to dive, and then the focus shifts. Activities around the diving, like yoga, excursions and dinners, are optional, so you can pace the week to suit how you feel.

A few things help before you travel. Tell the team about any worries or health conditions in advance, so they can plan for you. If you are brand new, a Try Freediving or Level 1 course at home means the basics will not be unfamiliar when you arrive.
