QUESTION

How do I prepare for my first try freediving lesson?

You do not need to do much to prepare for a try freediving lesson. Arrive well rested and hydrated, having eaten a light meal a couple of hours beforehand, and come with a relaxed, open mindset. Everything else, including all the gear and technique, is covered on the day.

What to Do Before and On the Day

In the day or two before, focus on the basics that help your body relax. A good night’s sleep, plenty of water, and a light meal a few hours before make a real difference. It is best to avoid heavy food, alcohol, and too much caffeine on the day, since they work against the calm state that freediving relies on.

You do not need any fitness, swimming background, beyond basic water comfort, or breath-hold ability before you start. People often arrive worried that they cannot hold their breath for long, and that is completely normal. The whole point of a try lesson is to teach you, so there is nothing to train for in advance.

On the day, bring your swimmers, a towel, and something warm for afterwards. Gear such as a mask, snorkel, fins, and a weight belt is provided, so you do not need to buy anything to give freediving a go.

It is also normal to feel a little nervous, and that is fine. The session moves at an easy pace, starting with theory and breathing before any time in the water, and there is never pressure to go deep. Most people are surprised by how quickly the nerves settle once they get started.
