QUESTION

How is safety handled on these trips?

Every in-water session is run by qualified freediving instructors, with divers working in small groups, a one up one down buddy system, and a briefing and dive plan before anyone gets in. Sessions are matched to ability rather than to the strongest person in the group, and conditions are assessed each day. If the water is not right for a session, it does not run.

What Safety Looks Like in the Water Each Day

The buddy system is the foundation. One diver goes down while another watches from the surface and meets them on the way back up, so no one ever dives unobserved. On depth sessions, divers are attached to the line by a lanyard, and instructors are in the water with the group rather than watching from a boat.

Groups are kept small and split by ability, and often reshuffled through the week as people progress. That matters because the fastest route to an incident is a diver trying to keep pace with someone else. Personal bests on our trips come from gradual progression with coaching, not from anyone being pushed.

Structure does the rest. Each session starts with a briefing and a dive plan, so everyone knows the depth, the order, the signals and what happens if someone becomes uncomfortable. Health and medical declarations are collected before the trip so the team can plan around anything relevant, which is why it pays to be upfront on those forms.

Experience sits behind all of it. Our instructors dive well beyond the depths students work at, and founder Dan Parsons has worked as head safety diver for National Geographic, including on Secret of the Whales. That background is where a lot of our in-water protocol comes from, particularly around managing groups near large marine life.

The team is relaxed about most things and deliberately not relaxed about this one. Conditions calls, session changes and sitting a dive out are all normal parts of a trip, and no one is ever talked into getting in when they do not want to.
