The Physiology of Effort Versus Relaxation
Holding your breath is not a strength contest; it is a conservation exercise. Every bit of muscular tension and mental strain consumes oxygen, and a body in “trying” mode consumes it quickly. A body in a settled, relaxed state uses far less, which is where longer holds actually come from.
Your nervous system decides which mode you are in. Effort and anxiety push you towards a stress state, with a faster heart rate and quicker oxygen use. Calm does the reverse, letting your natural dive response kick in, slowing your heart and settling your system. You cannot force your way into that state; you can only relax into it.
The urge to breathe adds another layer. It is driven mainly by rising carbon dioxide rather than a lack of oxygen, and stress makes that signal arrive earlier and feel harsher. Divers who fight their hold experience the discomfort sooner, then tense up in response, which shortens the hold further. It is a loop that effort feeds.
This is why coached training produces jumps that solo straining never does. We regularly see divers add significant time to their breath-hold in a single session once they stop trying hard and start relaxing properly, including guests who have gone from a 1 minute 15 second hold at home to 2 minutes on their first day of guided static training.
