QUESTION

How fit do I need to be for a freediving retreat or liveaboard?

You do not need to be especially fit to join a freediving retreat or liveaboard. Basic comfort in the water and the ability to swim are enough for most trips, because the diving is paced to your ability and sessions are optional. Relaxation and technique matter far more than fitness.

What “Fit Enough” Actually Means on a Trip

Freediving rewards calm over strength. You are not racing or pushing hard against the water; you are learning to move efficiently and stay relaxed. That means you can swim comfortably without being an athlete, and most reasonably healthy people are well-suited to a trip.

Our trips are built to run at each person’s pace. There is a full program for those with endless energy, plus downtime for anyone who would rather take it slowly, and you can opt out of any activity. Many trips also build in yoga, breathwork, and rest between dives, so you are never going flat out all day.

Experience genuinely varies across a group, and that is by design. We have had guests who did not learn to swim until their thirties, complete beginners, and seasoned divers, all on the same trip, each working at their own level. Nobody is expected to keep up with anyone else.

The one thing worth doing is being honest on your health and medical forms. Certain conditions affect freediving, so sharing them in advance lets the team look after you properly and tailor the diving to suit you.
