Why Shark Fear Is More Common Than You Think
Being nervous about sharks is completely normal. You are not soft, silly, or the only person thinking about it. Pretty much everyone has had that little movie scene play in their head at some point, even people who spend loads of time in the ocean.
What usually helps is slowing everything down. In a good freediving course, you are not thrown into deep water and told to be brave. You learn how to breathe properly before a dive, relax your body, move calmly, and stay aware without getting tense.
That calm makes a big difference. When your body feels settled, your mind has less to grab onto. You also learn that most ocean encounters are not dramatic at all. They are usually quiet, brief, and pretty amazing when you know what you are looking at.
The aim is not to pretend fear does not exist. The aim is to understand it, work with it, and slowly replace panic with skill, awareness, and trust in yourself. And yes, we still laugh a lot along the way. That helps too.
