QUESTION

What skills should I have before travelling for freediving?

Skills That Help, and Which Are Taught on the Trip

The genuine must-haves are simple. You should be able to swim and feel reasonably comfortable in open water. Beyond that, freediving is far more about staying calm than about athletic skill, so you do not need a long checklist before you travel.

A few skills do make the early days smoother if you already have them. Being able to equalise your ears, breathe in a relaxed way, and hold a basic breath hold all give you a head start. A recognised Level 1 certification helps too, though plenty of guests arrive without one.

On a beginner trip, the core skills are taught from scratch. You learn line diving, relaxation, breathing, and safe technique with the team alongside you, building from the surface down at your own pace. That is why a complete beginner and an experienced diver can share the same group, each working at their own level.

What helps to plan is matching the trip to your experience. Some trips suit first-timers, while others lean towards divers who want to push their progression. Being honest about your current skills lets the team point you to the trip that fits, so you get the most out of the week.
